Located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is famed for hosting one of tennis' grandest tournaments, the US Open. Named in honor of Billie Jean King, a trailblazing figure in tennis and women’s rights advocacy, the center was officially renamed in 2006 to acknowledge her significant contributions to the sport and society at large.

The facility, which opened in 1978, initially bore the name USTA National Tennis Center but was renamed to further emphasize its commitment to equality and justice, qualities that King has fought for throughout her illustrious career. Spread over 46.5 acres, the center is the largest public tennis facility in the world and is open to the public for play, making the sport accessible to a broader audience.

It features 22 courts in its main facility and an additional 11 in the adjoining park. The center is crowned by two of the sport’s most magnificent stadiums - Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis-specific stadium in the world, boasts a seating capacity of over 23,000 and features a retractable roof added in 2016 to avoid rain delays impacting the tournament.

Every year, the US Open draws global attention as fans from around the world gather to watch top international players compete. This event significantly boosts local economies, with thousands of fans patronizing local businesses. Moreover, the center itself undergoes various upgrades to enhance spectator experience and athlete preparation, demonstrating a continual investment in quality and technological advancements in sports facilities.

Besides its prestige as a sports venue, the center also serves a wider community role. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, it was transformed into a temporary hospital and food preparation area, showcasing its versatility and the role large sporting facilities can play in community assistance during emergencies.

As it prepares to host the US Open in 2024, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center continues to be a symbol of sports excellence and a beacon of community service, embodying the spirit of its namesake by promoting not only athletic excellence but also social responsibility and inclusivity.
