December 28: My portion and my refuge.

Psalm 142:1-7:
I cry out to the Lord with my voice; with my voice to the Lord I make my supplication. I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk they have secretly set a snare for me. Look on my right hand and see, for there is no one who acknowledges me; refuge has failed me; no one cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord:
I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Your name; the righteous shall surround me, for You shall deal bountifully with me.”

Psalm 143:1-10:
Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, and in Your righteousness. Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no one living is righteous. For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has made me dwell in darkness, like those who have long been dead. Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is distressed. I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands. I spread out my hands to You; my soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Selah
Answer me speedily, O Lord; my spirit fails! Do not hide Your face from me, lest I be like those who go down into the pit. Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You. Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; in You I take shelter. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.


Psalm 142 is a psalm of supplication and request to the Lord from someone who felt lonely, or as in a prison, because of the persecution of adversaries and the abandonment of friends.
The psalmist expressed two important reflections. First, he declared that whenever he felt about to faint, the Lord was still in control of his destiny, and he knew which path the psalmist should follow. And this is important to be clear as a firm conviction in our lives. We have to recognize that when many put a stumbling block in our way, they become obstacles for us to continue forward, the Lord is the One who has the last word of our destiny and He will fulfill His purpose with us and our families, no matter what impediments that are in front of us.
Second, the writer declared that the Lord Jesus is his refuge and his portion. When he said "refuge", he was mentioning that place where he could seek protection from those who want evil. In ancient times there were several cities called cities of refuge. When a person committed an accident and hurt someone, that person could go to these cities of refuge to prevent someone from seeking revenge against him. The psalmist, although he felt helpless, knew that the Lord was His refuge, where he would be protected from those who wanted to do him harm.
When the psalmist expressed that the Lord is his portion; in ancient times, the "portion" was a part of the inheritance that parents left to their children. The inheritance was all things of value that belonged to their parents and each child was given a portion. But the main one was the lands because that gave them a special place in the tribe and clan to which they belonged. In many cases, the parents lost their lands and did not leave any earthly inheritance to their children. In this case, the psalmist assured that the Lord is his portion.
I hope the Lord is your portion also, that is, the best legacy you have obtained in this land and that is the Spirit of God filling, strengthening and transforming you. May the Lord be your portion and the most valuable thing you have in your life.

The next psalm, the 139, is also a cry asking the Lord's direction in his life. The psalmist was asking the Lord to lead him and to show him the way he should go. But, then he said a very beautiful phrase: "teach me to do your will ”
Many times we don't know if the way we are living really pleases God or not, so it is important that we continually include in our prayers this request that He be the One to teach us to please Him in our way of living.
King David was someone who constantly made this prayer and that is why he won the Lord's favor, to the point that he was called “a man after God's own heart”.
Let us be aware that when we tell the Lord to guide our steps or show us the way, we are telling the Lord that we are willing to do His will and not ours, to follow His Word and not our wishes, to obey His advice and not follow our feelings

Salmos 142:1‭-‬7 RVA2015:
Con mi voz clamo al SEÑOR; con mi voz pido al SEÑOR misericordia. Delante de él derramo mi lamento; delante de él expreso mi angustia. Cuando mi espíritu está desmayado dentro de mí tú conoces mi senda. En el camino en que he de andar han escondido una trampa para mí. Miro a la derecha y observo, y no hay quien me reconozca. No tengo refugio; no hay quien se preocupe por mi vida. A ti clamo, oh SEÑOR. Digo: “Tú eres mi refugio y mi porción en la tierra de los vivientes”. Escucha mi clamor porque estoy muy afligido; líbrame de los que me persiguen porque son más fuertes que yo. Saca mi alma de la prisión para que alabe tu nombre. Los justos me rodearán porque me colmarás de bien.

Salmos 143:1‭-‬10 RVA2015:
Oh SEÑOR, escucha mi oración; atiende mis ruegos. Respóndeme por tu fidelidad, por tu justicia. No entres en juicio con tu siervo porque no se justificará delante de ti ningún viviente. Porque el enemigo ha perseguido mi alma; ha postrado en tierra mi vida, me ha hecho habitar en lugares tenebrosos como los muertos de antaño. Mi espíritu desmaya dentro de mí; mi corazón queda asombrado. Me acuerdo de los días de antaño, medito en todos tus hechos y reflexiono en las obras de tus manos. Extiendo mis manos hacia ti; mi alma te anhela como la tierra sedienta. Selah
Respóndeme pronto, oh SEÑOR, porque mi espíritu desfallece. No escondas de mí tu rostro para que no sea yo como los que descienden a la fosa. Hazme oír por la mañana tu misericordia porque en ti confío. Hazme conocer el camino en que he de andar porque hacia ti levanto mi alma. Líbrame de mis enemigos, oh SEÑOR, porque en ti me refugio. Enséñame a hacer tu voluntad porque tú eres mi Dios; tu buen Espíritu me guíe a tierra de rectitud.


El salmo 142 es un salmo de súplica y ruego al señor de alguien que se sentía solo, o como en una prisión, por la persecución de adversarios y el abandono de amigos.
El salmista expresó dos reflexiones importantes. Primero, él declaró que cada vez que se sentía a punto de desmayar, el Señor seguía teniendo el control de su destino, y sabía cuál era el camino que el salmista debía seguir. Y esto es importante tenerlo en claro como una convicción firme en nuestras vidas. Tenemos que reconocer que cuando muchos nos ponen tropiezos en el camino, se convierten en obstáculos para que nosotros continuemos hacia adelante, el Señor es el que tiene la última palabra de nuestro destino y el cumplirá su propósito con nosotros y nuestras familias, no importando los impedimentos que estén al frente en nuestro camino.
Segundo, el escritor declaró que el Señor Jesús es su refugio y su porción. Cuando él dijo “refugio”, él estaba mencionando ese lugar donde él podría buscar protección de aquellos que quieren el mal. En el tiempo antiguo había varias ciudades denominadas ciudades de refugio. Cuando una persona cometía algún accidente y le hacía daño a alguien, esa persona podría acudir a estas ciudades de refugio para evitar que alguien buscara hacer venganza contra él. El salmista, aunque se sentía desamparado, sabía que el Señor era su refugio, donde sería protegido de los que querían hacerle el mal.
Cuando el salmista expresó que el Señor es su porción; en la antigüedad, la "porción'' era una parte de la herencia que los padres le dejaban a los hijos. La herencia eran todas las cosas de valor que pertenecían a sus padres y a cada hijo se le daba una porción. Pero la principal eran las tierras porque eso les daba un lugar especial en la tribu y clan al cual pertenecían. En muchos casos, los padres perdían sus terrenos y no le dejaban a sus hijos ninguna herencia terrenal. En este caso, el salmista aseguró que el Señor es su porción.
Espero que el Señor sea tu porción también, o sea, la mejor herencia que hayas obtenido en esta tierra y que es el Espíritu de Dios llenándote, fortaleciéndote y transformándote. Que el Señor sea tu porción y lo más valioso que tengas en tu vida.

El siguiente salmo, el 139, también es un clamor pidiéndole al Señor la dirección en su vida. El salmista estaba pidiendo al Señor que lo dirija y que le muestre el camino que debería seguir. Pero, después dijo una frase muy hermosa: “enséñame a hacer tu voluntad”.
Muchas veces no sabemos si la forma que estamos viviendo realmente le agrada a Dios o no, por eso es importante que continuamente incluyamos en nuestras oraciones está petición de que Él sea el que nos enseñe a agradarle en nuestra forma de vivir.
El rey David era alguien que constantemente hacía esta oración y por eso se ganó el favor del Señor, al punto que fue llamado “un hombre conforme al corazón de Dios".

Seamos conscientes que cuando le decimos al Señor que guíe nuestros pasos o que nos muestre el camino, le estamos diciendo al Señor que estamos dispuestos a hacer su voluntad y no la nuestra, a seguir su Palabra y no nuestros deseos, a obedecer su consejo y no seguir nuestros sentimientos.
