Deuteronomio 23: Ama y valora al extranjero.

Deuteronomio 23:3-8:
“No entrará el amonita ni el moabita en la congregación del SEÑOR. Ni aun en la décima generación entrarán jamás en la congregación del SEÑOR, por cuanto no salieron a recibirlos al camino con pan y agua cuando ustedes salieron de Egipto, y porque él contrató contra ti a Balaam hijo de Beor, de Petor, de Siria mesopotámica, para que te maldijera. Pero el SEÑOR tu Dios no quiso escuchar a Balaam. El SEÑOR tu Dios te convirtió la maldición en bendición, porque el SEÑOR tu Dios te amaba. No procurarás jamás la paz ni el bienestar de ellos, en todos tus días.
“No abominarás al edomita, porque es tu hermano. No abominarás al egipcio, porque fuiste extranjero en su tierra. Los hijos que les nazcan en la tercera generación entrarán en la congregación del SEÑOR.

En este capítulo vemos varias reglas acerca del diario vivir. Reglas de higiene y de comportamiento en la guerra, en el trato con los cautivos, con las cosechas de los vecinos, con las ofrendas y votos, etc.

Es muy interesante leer acerca del trato de otras naciones. Aquellas que fueron injustas con los israelitas que iban a sufrir guerras y una separación permanente. Ni moabitas y amonitas tendrían una relación diplomática entre ellos.
Si algún ciudadano de estas naciones entraba a Israel para vivir como extranjero, no podía entrar en las asambleas y fiestas sagradas con los judios.
En cambio, los edomitas que eran los descendientes de Esaú, el hermano de Jacob, y los egipcios que eran de la tierra donde Israel era extranjero y que le abrieron la puerta a sus antepasados para vivir en la tierra, ellos tendrían un privilegio especial delante de Dios, y por eso no se le permitía a Israel hacerles daño si alguno decidía vivir en Israel.
Dios no quería que Israel se olvidara del trato que debían darle a los extranjeros. Que la abundancia de la tierra prometida no los convirtiera en gente arrogante, oprimiendo al necesitado que buscaba una mejor vida en Israel. Dios bendice a aquel que es compasivo y se enoja con aquel que actúa con despotismo, abusando del extranjero, o burlándose de su condición.

Cuando ayudamos al inmigrante, al que quiere comenzar una nueva vida y viene de otras tierras, debemos hacerlo sabiendo que esto agrada a Dios y nos trae más bendición de Dios.

Tiempo después, en la historia de Israel, vemos que David cumplió este mandamiento y recibió su recompensa.
Cuando los amalequitas invadieron su casa y la de sus soldados, ¡se llevaron todo! Mujeres, hijos y pertenencias. Todos lloraron desconsolados, pero David pidió la dirección de Dios y Dios le dijo que los persiguiera. Cuando ellos se levantaron, no sabían a dónde debían ir. En el camino, vieron un egipcio tirado en el suelo, enfermo y moribundo.
En vez de seguir adelante urgidos por rescatar sus familias, tuvieron compasión del egipcio. Le dieron de comer y beber hasta que recuperó sus fuerzas. Cuando pudo hablar, les contó que él era un esclavo que los amalecitas habían abandonado.
David puso en práctica este mandamiento, no lo aborreció como lo hizo el amalecita, y este egipcio le indicó el camino y el lugar a donde ellos debían dirigirse. Y David pudo ir hacia el lugar correcto, pudo planear un plan de ataque, y cuando llegaron los pudieron sorprender, arrasando a sus enemigos y recuperando sus familias y también sus pertenencias. Además, tomaron el botín de guerra que estos saqueadores habían obtenido.

Que esto nos enseñe a que debemos ayudar sin prejuicios, porque no sabemos qué tanto esta persona pueda ser de bendición para nosotros.
Tengamos cuidado de menospreciar a alguien que no comparta nuestra propia fe. Más bien amemos y seamos luz para ellos. Posiblemente más adelante puedan ser parte de la familia de Dios y ser de bendición para la iglesia, nuestras vidas y nuestros hogares.

Deuteronomy 23: Love and value the foreigner.

Deuteronomy 23:3-8:
“An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord forever, because they did not meet you with bread and water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. Nevertheless the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you. You shall not seek their peace nor their prosperity all your days forever.
“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land. The children of the third generation born to them may enter the assembly of the Lord.

In this chapter we see several rules about daily living. Rules of hygiene and behavior in war, in dealing with captives, with neighbors' crops, with offerings and vows, etc.

It is very interesting to read about the treatment of other nations. Those who were unfair to the Israelites who were going to suffer wars and a permanent separation. Neither Moabites and Ammonites would have a diplomatic relationship with each other.
If any citizen of these nations entered Israel to live as a foreigner, he could not enter the holy assemblies and festivals with the Jews.
On the other hand, the Edomites who were the descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob, and the Egyptians who were from the land where Israel was a foreigner and who opened the door for their ancestors to live in the land, they would have a special privilege before of God, and that is why Israel was not allowed to harm them if anyone decided to live in Israel.
God did not want Israel to forget how they should treat foreigners. That the abundance of the promised land does not turn them into arrogant people, oppressing the needy who seek a better life in Israel. God blesses the one who is compassionate and gets angry with the one who acts with despotism, abusing the foreigner, or making fun of his condition.

When we help the immigrant, who wants to start a new life and comes from other lands, we must do so knowing that this pleases God and brings us more blessings from God.

Some time later, in the history of Israel, we see that David fulfilled this commandment and received his reward.
When the Amalekites invaded his home and that of his soldiers, they took everything! Women, children and belongings. They all cried inconsolably, but David asked for God's direction and God told him to go after them. When they got up, they did not know where they should go. On the way, they saw an Egyptian lying on the ground, sick and dying.
Instead of pressing forward to rescue their families, they had compassion on the Egyptian. They gave him food and drink until he regained his strength. When he was able to speak, he told them that he was a slave that the Amalekites had abandoned.
David put this commandment into practice, he did not hate him as the Amalekite did, and this Egyptian indicated the way and the place where they should go. And David was able to go to the right place, he was able to plan an attack, and when they arrived they were able to surprise them, razing their enemies and recovering their families and also their belongings. Also, they took the spoils of war that these looters had obtained.

May this teach us that we must help without prejudice, because we do not know how much this person can be a blessing to us.
Let's be careful not to look down on someone who does not share our own faith. Rather let us love and be light for them. Possibly later they can be part of the family of God and be a blessing to the church, our lives and our homes.
