Black History Month is officially over but many of the programs honoring African-Americans in classical music were recorded for online viewing. One such concert is Deep River: Black Currents in Classical Music. The live stream of the event is still available to view. There’s also a Black History Month playlist from SPHINX, new George Walker album and Early Music America is offering a bit of help to musicians still struggling from the pandemic.
The live streamed event on February 3rd was hosted by the Apollo Theater, New York’s classical music radio station WQXR, and American Composers Orchestra. It’s a performance of music by black composers sung by Soprano Karen Slack and baritone Kenneth Overton. There’s also an upcoming concert version of the opera Emmett Till.
