Designing the first phase of the city of College Station's new sports complex is in its final review. At the last city council meeting, approval was given to change the name from Southeast Park. The new name, is Texas Independence Ballpark...Midtown College Station.

Parks and Recreation director David Schmitz says the parks and recreation advisory board took more than one year to come up with the independence theme.

The park, located along Rock Prairie between the freeway and Fitch, will have eight fields.

The first four fields will be named for historic Texas independence battles... Gonzales, Goliad, Alamo, and San Jacinto.

The remaining fields will be named Sabine River, Rio Grande, Red River, and Lone Star.

The geographic reference to the name of the new park was requested by the city's economic development director, Natalie Ruiz, for marketing purposes.

Ruiz and Schmitz responded to a council question about signage at this park not being consistent with other city signage.

Schmitz told the council that about 30 percent of the infrastructure has been completed.
