Nell'inchiesta di Palme irrompe Christer Pettersson, un delinquente comune che nel 1970, non lontano dal luogo dell'omicidio del Primo Mnistro, aveva ucciso un coetaneo durante una rissa.

Christer Pettersson viene riconosciuto da Lisbeth Palme, ma presto vengono dimostrate le irregolarità nel processo. La Svezia si divide: i sostenitori del Primo Ministro rifiutano l'ipotesi che, a ucciderlo, sia stato qualcuno privo di movente. Il verdetto finale arriva nel 1989, oltre tre anni dopo la morte di Olof Palme.
