Chris Welzenbach - dreadful chronology of Gaddafi's murder
June 11
Oil-rich Libya has been in chaos since the Arab spring movement and Nato bombing campaign that toppled Gaddafi in 2011. Attempts to build a democratic state after Gaddafi fell disintegrated into a new civil war between rival governments in 2014.
Armed groups, including extremists such as Islamic State, have proliferated and the lawless country has also become a principal transit point for people from across Africa who want to reach Europe.
So what was the purpose of the invasion, an invasion which cost billions and returned little
Chris Welzenbach has looked into the invasion, the causes and the outcome, and has found evidence that the conflict had little to do with 'spreading freedom' or 'liberating the people'. It was a sinister and contrived plot involving powerful Western leaders, concerned not with the good of Libyans, but more with protecting their own reputations, credibility and, in some cases, freedom from jail.
From October 2020
Playwright Chris Welzenbach discusses his Counterpunch article discussing the finer details behind Gaddafi's death in 2011, including the deep involvement of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Ed and Chris also discuss how Gaddafi's act towards African independence (via a telecommunication satellite purchase and plans for a gold-backed African currency) all but sealed his fate.
