The unrest began with attacks on military personnel, burning vehicles, and roadblocks set up by cartel members to prevent law enforcement from moving freely in the city. This violence reflects the cartels' aggressive response to any threat to their leadership, causing widespread chaos and disruption in the region

The Sinaloa Cartel, particularly factions loyal to El Chapo’s sons, commonly referred to as "Los Chapitos," have employed these violent tactics to exert control and retaliate against government actions. The resulting clashes have significantly impacted daily life in Culiacán, with local authorities advising residents to stay indoors and avoid main roads due to the ongoing instability and threat of further violence.

The Mexican government suspects that the "Chapitos," the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, were behind a plot to abduct Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a co-founder of the cartel. According to recent reports, Ovidio Guzmán, one of El Chapo's sons, is believed to have orchestrated this kidnapping attempt to gain leverage and possibly hand El Mayo over to U.S. authorities, leveraging it for his own benefit or to create chaos within the cartel leadership


This theory has been complicated by denials from Ovidio Guzmán's lawyer, who rejects the idea that there was any intention to kidnap El Mayo. Nonetheless, the suspicion highlights the ongoing tensions and shifting allegiances within the Sinaloa Cartel, driven by a mix of familial loyalty and ruthless ambition

Aurora, Colorado, is currently facing concerns about alleged takeovers of apartment complexes by members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Reports indicate that the gang, which originated in Venezuela and has been spreading across the U.S. border, is accused of taking control of certain apartment complexes in Aurora. Videos have surfaced showing armed men, purportedly gang members, patrolling these complexes openly with firearms. Local residents and city council members have expressed alarm, claiming the gang is engaging in criminal activities such as drug trafficking and potentially even sex trafficking within these complexes


The situation has generated controversy, with some city and state officials dismissing the claims as exaggerated or baseless. Governor Jared Polis's office referred to the concerns as "imagination," despite the visual evidence presented in various reports. The Aurora Police Department has acknowledged that members of the gang are active in the area but has described their influence as isolated incidents rather than widespread control. A special task force has been set up to address the situation and investigate the gang's activities in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies​
