Plastic production strongly distinguished the initial activity of the Ginori Factory, founded by Marquis Carlo Ginori in 1737 in Doccia, near Florence. What distinguished Ginori’s production from that of other manufacturers was the desire to recreate in porcelain Greek and Roman statues of the classical era. The white porcelain was a perfect tool to recreate, through a modern and refined material, the elegant purity of the models of antiquity. The sculptural group of “Cupid and Psyche” is derived from a statue of the Hellenistic period preserved in the Medici collections of the Uffizi and fits perfectly into the classicist cultural climate that dominated the Florentine artistic world from the mid-eighteenth century, anticipating by a few decades the elegant beauty sought by the neoclassical style.
