Amazon Web Services hosted a summit in Johannesburg, South Africa to discuss the advancements of Generative Artificial Intelligence and committed to making a follow-on investment of $1.7 billion by 2029 to increase renewable energy supply to its data centres. AWS has two of its three data centres located in South Africa. At least one of them consumes about 1,000 megawatts of electricity. AWS will use that investment to generate more electricity to sustain the high demand for storage for data points and also use AWS Bedrock which allows companies to build on existing Gen AI models, and scale their operations.
