The 1983 Beirut barracks bombing was a deadly attack on October 23, 1983, targeting U.S. and French military forces stationed in Lebanon as part of a multinational peacekeeping force during the Lebanese Civil War. A suicide bomber drove a truck filled with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks at Beirut International Airport, detonating a massive blast that killed 241 American servicemen. Almost simultaneously, a second bomber struck the French barracks, killing 58 French paratroopers.

The attack was orchestrated by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, marking one of the first large-scale suicide bombings against military targets. The bombing underscored the rising threat of asymmetric warfare and highlighted the vulnerabilities of foreign military forces operating in conflict zones. It led to a significant shift in U.S. military policy, emphasizing the need for better force protection and intelligence, and ultimately resulted in the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Lebanon in early 1984. The event is considered a turning point in the history of modern terrorism, influencing future U.S. counterterrorism and military strategies.
