Reginald Randolph was released after spending over 800 days in Rikers Island for stealing cold medicine from Duane Reade stores in New York City. Randolph, who has a history of over 50 misdemeanor convictions and a few felonies, was originally charged with two counts of third-degree burglary due to a "no trespass" order against him. His bail was set at $15,000, which he could not pay, leading to his extended detention.

During his incarceration, Randolph struggled with chronic health issues, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, schizoaffective disorder, and polysubstance use disorder. He was accepted into a drug court program but left due to the stringent requirements. Consequently, he faced more legal challenges and was eventually sentenced to two to four years in prison.

After his release, Randolph moved into The Redemption Center, a supportive housing program, where he began receiving mental health and substance dependence treatment. His legal team continues to push for clemency from Governor Kathy Hochul to prevent his return to prison while his appeal is pending.
