With Trump, there is some controversy surrounding the Trump administration's efforts to ban certain types of body armor. In 2019, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced a proposal to prohibit the sale of certain body armor products that are designed to defeat armor-piercing rifle rounds, which are typically used in sniper rifles. The proposal was part of an effort to improve the safety of law enforcement and other military personnel, as well as to prevent the sale of certain weapons and body armor that could potentially be used for illegal or nefarious purposes. However, the proposal was met with strong opposition from many in the gun industry and some lawmakers, who argued that it would infringe on Second Amendment rights and harm small businesses. In response to the backlash, the DoD ultimately delayed the implementation of the proposed rule and has since retracted it. Here's a timeline of the events: In 2019, the DoD proposes a rule change that would prohibit the sale of body armor that can defeat armor-piercing rifle rounds. The proposal sparks controversy and opposition from the gun industry and some lawmakers. In January 2020, the DoD delays the implementation of the proposed rule until further review. In March 2020, the DoD announces that it is retracting the proposed rule and will instead work with industry stakeholders to develop new guidelines for body armor testing and certification. In June 2020, the DoD releases a new set of guidelines for body armor testing and certification, which do not prohibit the sale of body armor that can defeat armor-piercing rifle rounds. It's worth noting that while Donald Trump was not directly involved in this specific controversy, his administration did announce the proposal to ban certain types of body armor in 2019. However, as mentioned above, the proposal was ultimately delayed and retracted due to opposition from various stakeholders.
