First, the Mayberry boys are bored to the point of screaming by "A Medal For Opie", the Andy Griffith Show's ode to good sportsmanship and bad writing. Second, Barney actually tries to have sympathy for a criminal, and the show laughs in his face at the idea of rehabilitation.
