From here on the story proceeds without the help of Emmanuel's diary, which ended with the previous chapter.
Completely depressed by the failure of his attempt with Antonia, swept up in a self-destructive vortex, Emmanuel returns to look for Michelle known as Gerti, the woman who had brought him to the brink. Strangely, however, the woman refuses to help him fall even further and reveals an unexpected depth of humanity.
