2024 BX1, a newly discovered asteroid, turned into a fireball and exploded in the sky over Berlin, Germany, on January 21st. While small asteroids colliding with Earth are often detected as they enter the atmosphere, scientists spotted this one about three hours before impact. But that's not the only thing that makes 2024 BX1 special. According to a new study published on the arXiv database, it was traveling at 50,000 km/h and spinning once every 2.588 seconds. This is the fastest spin ever observed in an asteroid near Earth, Live Science reported on May 2nd.Previously, the record belonged to 2020 HS7, which spun once every 2.99 seconds. This asteroid had a diameter of 4-8 meters, slightly larger than 2024 BX1, which may explain why it spun more slowly.
