1 Samuel 15: El espíritu envanecido, altivo y orgulloso de Saúl.

1 Samuel 15:16-23:
Entonces Samuel dijo a Saúl: —Déjame declararte lo que el SEÑOR me dijo anoche:
Saúl le dijo: —Decláralo.
Samuel dijo: —Aunque eras insignificante ante tus propios ojos, ¿no fuiste hecho cabeza de las tribus de Israel? ¿No te ha ungido el SEÑOR como rey sobre Israel? El SEÑOR te ha encomendado una misión y te ha dicho: “Ve y destruye completamente a esos pecadores de Amalec. Hazles la guerra hasta que los extermines”. ¿Por qué, pues, no has obedecido la voz del SEÑOR? ¿Por qué te lanzaste sobre el botín e hiciste lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR?
Saúl respondió a Samuel: —He obedecido la voz del SEÑOR y fui a la misión que el SEÑOR me encomendó. He traído a Agag, rey de Amalec, y he destruido completamente a los amalequitas. Pero el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, lo mejor del anatema, para sacrificarlas al SEÑOR tu Dios en Gilgal.
Entonces Samuel preguntó: —¿Se complace tanto el SEÑOR en los holocaustos y en los sacrificios como en que la palabra del SEÑOR sea obedecida? Ciertamente el obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios, y el prestar atención es mejor que el sebo de los carneros. Porque la rebeldía es como el pecado de adivinación, y la obstinación es como la iniquidad de la idolatría. Por cuanto tú has desechado la palabra del SEÑOR, él también te ha desechado a ti, para que no seas rey.

En este capítulo vemos que Dios le dió una oportunidad más a Saúl, dándole una misión. Saúl destruyó a los Amalecitas como castigo porque ellos han estado cometiendo crímenes, injusticias y maldades desde que Israel salió de Egipto. Saúl obtuvo una gran victoria sobre los amalecitas pero, una vez más, Saúl cayó bajo la presión del pueblo de guardar lo mejor del ganado.
Más que sentir la presión, también vemos una actitud de altivez y arrogancia que Saúl permitió que se incubara en su corazón y brotara después de haber ganado esta batalla. Tanto que se mandó a hacer un monumento y se embriagó con la celebración y vítores del pueblo felicitando al rey Saúl.
Lo que no sabía Saúl es que Dios ya había confirmado a Samuel la destitución permanente de Saúl como rey, porque su actitud y falta de carácter lo había hastiado ya y no quería saber nada de Saúl. Saul había caído de la gracia de Dios.
Cuando Samuel lo confrontó, Saúl trató de minimizar su error, justificándolo con algo espiritual: el ganado rescatado de Amalec es para sacrificarlo al Señor como ofrenda. En otras ocasiones esta razón tendría validez, ya que esa era la tradición al volver de la guerra con el botín; pero en esta ocasión Dios fue muy claro al ordenar destruir todo porque era considerado maldito todo objeto, animal y poblador de esa nación.
Igualmente sucedió con Jericó; Dios dijo que todo debía ser quemado, pero de las siguientes naciones que ellos conquistarían sí podrían tomar botín.
En este caso, Samuel reprendió a Saúl. Saúl insistió en esta excusa pero Samuel le enseñó que un acto espiritual no puede reemplazar la orden de Dios. Dios no le dijo que trajeran botín ni sacrificios, la orden fue exterminar todo lo que traía maldición. ¡Y para Dios es más importante obedecer que mil sacrificios, es mejor someterse a Dios que traerle regalos! ¡Es tan delicada esta situación que Samuel comparó la rebeldía, la obstinación y la desobediencia con el pecado de la brujería!

Cuidemos nuestro corazón para no tener el espíritu de Saúl, que con acciones nobles o espirituales intentemos tapar una vida llena de arrogancia, altivez, desobediencia y desacato.
¡Dios es un Dios celoso, y a Dios no podemos engañarlo! Tal vez vivamos una apariencia de piedad pero Dios es el que sabe y conoce nuestros deseos y las intenciones del corazón.
El corazón de Saúl estaba tan embriagado por el sabor de la victoria que no entendió la reprensión de Samuel, al punto que rasgó las vestiduras de Samuel para que no se fuera y lo acompañara a adorar a Dios para no quedar en verguenza ante el pueblo y sentirse honrado. Él pensó que esto era un simple regaño de Samuel, pero se dió cuenta que su reino no sería permanente.
Hoy meditemos y examinemos nuestro corazón de alguna actitud de altivez y desobediencia. ¿Estamos cumpliendo los mandamientos de Dios? ¿Estamos viviendo conforme a su voluntad? ¿Estamos tratando de tapar algún defecto de nuestro diario vivir con acciones espirituales? ¿Maltratamos a los miembros de nuestra familia y pensamos que no es tan grave porque servimos en algún ministerio en nuestra congregación? ¿Somos déspotas en el trato con algún relativo y lo ocultamos con algún acto de servicio noble y notable ante el público?

Soy Eduardo Rodríguez. Que el Señor no permita que un espíritu malo como el de Saúl enceguezca nuestros ojos espirituales.

1 Samuel 15: The conceited, haughty and proud spirit of Saul.

1 Samuel 15:16-23:
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
And he said to him, “Speak on.” So Samuel said, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
And Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”

In this chapter we see that God gave Saul one more chance, giving him a mission. Saul destroyed the Amalekites as punishment because they have been committing crimes, injustices and evil since Israel came out of Egypt. Saul won a great victory over the Amalekites, but once again Saul fell under pressure from the people to keep the best of the cattle.
More than just feeling the pressure, we also see an attitude of haughtiness and arrogance that Saul allowed to incubate in his heart and sprout after he had won this battle. So much so that a monument was built and he became intoxicated with the celebration and cheers of the people congratulating king Saul.
What Saul did not know is that God had already confirmed to Samuel the permanent dismissal of Saul as king, because his attitude and lack of character had already disgusted Him and He did not want to know anything about Saul. Saul had fallen from God's grace.
When confronted by Samuel, Saul tried to minimize his mistake, justifying it with something spiritual: Amalek's ransomed cattle are to be sacrificed to the Lord as an offering. On other occasions this reason would have validity, since that was the tradition when returning from war with the booty; but on this occasion God was very clear in ordering to destroy everything because every object, animal and inhabitant of that nation was considered cursed.
The same thing happened with Jericho; God said that everything must be burned, but from the next nations that they conquer they could take spoils.
In this case, Samuel rebuked Saul. Saul insisted on this excuse but Samuel taught him that a spiritual act cannot replace God's command. God did not tell him to bring loot or sacrifices, the order was to exterminate everything that brought curse. And for God it is more important to obey than a thousand sacrifices, it is better to submit to God than to bring him gifts! This situation is so delicate that Samuel compared rebellion, obstinacy and disobedience with the sin of witchcraft!

Let us take care of our hearts to avoid having the spirit of Saul, that with noble or spiritual actions we try to cover a life full of arrogance, haughtiness, disobedience and contempt.
God is a jealous God, and we cannot fool God! We may live an appearance of piety but God is the One who knows and knows our desires and the intentions of the heart.
Saul's heart was so intoxicated by the taste of victory that he did not understand Samuel's rebuke, to the point that he tore Samuel's clothes so that he would not leave and accompany him to worship God so as not to be ashamed before the people and feel honored. He thought this was a simple scolding from Samuel, but realized that his kingdom would not be permanent.
Today let us meditate and examine our hearts of any attitude of arrogance and disobedience. Are we keeping God's commandments? Are we living according to His will? Are we trying to cover up some defects in our daily lives with spiritual actions? Do we mistreat our family members and think that it is not so serious because we serve in some ministry in our congregation? Are we despots in dealing with some relatives and hiding it with some noble and notable act of service before the public?
