Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 65 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Thursday morning 05 September 2024.

Happy birthday Sadie Muntz!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly clear and a near record 17 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning!

In Rugby League: The Dolphins hold their destiny in their own hands in another do-or-die play-off on Sunday in Newcastle.

After sending the Broncos packing last weekend, Wayne Bennett’s pod play Kalyn Ponga and his band of Knights, with the winner snaring eighth spot in the 2024 NRL Finals.

The Dolphins will be hoping lightning strikes twice for their most important game of the year, as they try to defy the odds to play NRL finals footy in just their second season.

“We have definitely got the belief in the team and the players to do the job,” Dolpins star Jamayne Isaako said.

In Rugby Union: Alarmingly, the national rugby unions of Australia, England, Scotland and France are all facing financial strife.

In April, Rugby Australia announced a loss of A$9.2Million for 2023 and later shuttered the Rebels. Scotland followed a couple of months later, warning it expects to lose £10.6M, their second straight loss of over £10M in a season.

Despite hosting last year’s Rugby World Cup, the French Rugby Federation announced it had an operating deficit of €16Million for the 2022-2023 season and expect to have a deficit of €24M at the end of this season.

New Zealand has also recorded back-to-back financial losses, the latest being NZ$9M.
Should they turn to Saudi Arabia or Qatar for help?

In SportsBiz: The hype around Colorado’s football team is still buzzing under superstar Head Coach Deion Sanders, following a season-opening 31-26 win over North Dakota State that drew 4.8 million viewers on ESPN, the network’s best college football Thursday opener since 2017.

Off the field, Sanders continues to rake in millions of dollars for his sunglasses sponsor, “Blenders Eyewear”, which features a special-edition “Coach Prime” collection that has sold over 200,000 Deion Sanders pairs.”

At US$67 a pop, Coach Prime was responsible for more than US$13.4Million in revenue last year.
In the US Open Tennis: “The sun always comes up the next day and hopefully things will get better," Brad Gilbert spins Coco Gauff’s US Open fourth-round loss to Emma Navarro.

Unsurprisingly, Nick Kyrgios offered to coach Gauff, saying he was happy to take up the opportunity if it arose.

Has Kyrgios got a crush on Gauff?

And finally, only in the USA: 83 is the number of hot dogs the Undisputed World Hot Dog-eating King, Joey Chestnut ate in 10 minutes, during his Labor Day clash with longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi of Japan.

Chestnut, a 16-time champion of the “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest”, smashed the previous world record of 76, which he set in 2021, while Kobayashi downed a personal-record 66 hotdogs.
Their showdown was held at the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas and live-streamed on Netflix, dubbed “Chestnut vs Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef”.

Chestnut, who was banned from the “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating” competition in July, following his partnership with plant-based Impossible Foods, won US$100,000, a hot dog-shaped trophy, and a WWE Championship belt.

So, the 66 million hot dogs question is – is hot dog eating going to be included in the Las Angeles Olympics Games?
