  • Crumbley Lawyer Speaks - May 7, 2024

7 MAY 2024 · James Crumbley’s attorney breaks her silence to describe a prosecution that often seemed more like a smear campaign, while ML and Marc dive deep into defense strategy and what it’s like to represent the reviled. STRAIGHT DOPE: She might not be a lot of fun at parties that don’t involve deep discussions of constitutional law, but Mariell Lehman is still mighty interesting to anyone who wonders what it was like to defend James Crumbley, the father of Oxford High School massacre shooter Ethan Crumbley. Mariell spent 2½ years representing James Crumbley in a case that she says was unlike just about any other she’s ever handled. For starters, she said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald began making decisions about the case long before the evidence was in. Mariell says it was part of a pattern that seemed more about ruining the Crumbleys’ reputation than administering justice. Mariell offers lots of revelations -- including that she originally wanted to be a prosecutor and that she really likes James Crumbley. Marc asks Mariell whether she has been targeted by people outraged about the Crumbley case. She shares stories about the keyboard warriors (who ML prefers to call keyboard cowards). The Crumbley case made history because of the charges filed against the parents, but there were plenty of other unusual occurrences, such as the judge waiting until the last minute to announce whether mom Jennifer Crumbley or dad James Crumbley would go on trial first. Mariell discusses how she handled all the curve balls. Did Jennifer Crumbley’s decision to testify in her case – and her conviction – impact Mariell’s strategy for defending James Crumbley? Listen and learn. ML asks Mariell what happens to the pets, the homes and anyone or anything else dependent on people who get locked up? Mariell says life – and a lot of sales – goes on. Mariell says the prosecution’s agreement not to prosecute school officials came as a surprise to defense attorneys – and had a significant impact on the way they handled their cases. She explains why. Another potential blow to the defense was the judge’s decision to move the cases forward even after Ethan Crumbley’s last-minute decision not to testify in his parents’ case. Mariell explains why that was a big deal – and how there was nothing defense attorneys could do to stop it. The judge issued a gag order early in the Crumbley case, but it’s not clear whether the prosecutor’s decision to give a documentary film crew access to her team may have impacted that gag order or the case itself. Mariell gives her take, while ML wonders whether the judge expressed any concerns. This also gives him a chance to work in this week’s Kwame Kilpatrick reference.   Listen for some instant classic Shawn drops from last week’s episode with Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports that capture Shawn’s feelings about a former lover … and, quite possibly, how he feels about his podcast partners. Marc asks a deep question about innocent victims of Luke Skywalker’s assault on the Death Star, inspiring ML to trot out his lame imitation of Mark Hamill’s spot-on imitation of Harrison Ford. • Detroit Wins the Draft - April 30, 2024

30 APR 2024 · Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports stops in to talk about an epic FBI fail and Detroit’s epic performance as host of the NFL Draft while Marc joins in and ML types Shawn’s national sports writing award. STRAIGHT DOPE: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/shawn-windsor/2023/02/17/michigan-state-shooting-tom-izzo-parents-afraid-children-students/69915382007/ Dan returns to the basement just in time for ML to inadvertently revive the Caitlin Clark discussion when he makes the mistake of mentioning that Burt Reynolds, in this week’s intro, is wearing 22 in the movie “Semi Tough,” then noting that it’s the same number he wore in “The Longest Yard.” As luck would have it, 22 is also Clark’s number. That conversation turns to controversy stirred up when a sports writer for the Indianapolis Star rather awkwardly welcomed Clark to Indy, where she landed as the top pick in the WBNA draft. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2024/04/17/caitlin-clark-im-so-sorry-on-wednesday-i-was-part-of-the-problem/73364922007/ Dan and Marc bemoan the fact that more people are paying attention to that tempest in a teapot instead of another huge story out of Indianapolis: The FBI’s agreement to pay more than $100 million to Larry Nassar’s victims. Dan discusses how the FBI did virtually nothing to investigate or stop Nassar from abusing young gymnasts – and may have even prevented other authorities from stopping the diabolical doctor. https://sports.yahoo.com/fbi-cant-be-condemned-enough-for-its-neglect-in-larry-nassar-scandal-200949854.html Detroit is still basking in the afterglow of a successful NFL Draft. • Super Unsolved Mystery - April 23, 2024

23 APR 2024 · Did Detroit sweep a murder under the red carpet it rolled out for the NFL during Super Bowl XL? ML, Marc and Shawn discuss a cold case that police officials once described as a “delayed arrest.” Even if that was a legit law enforcement term, the delay is now going on 18 years. STRAIGHT DOPE: The entire city is amped up about the NFL Draft coming to Detroit, and ML has a story about an 18-year-old cold case including interviews with cops who worked the case and the victim’s family, so of course Yawn Windsor gets the show started with musings on people who take trips by themselves. https://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/ml-elrick/2024/04/22/detroit-super-bowl-murder-still-unsolved/73374195007/. ML’s mention of Tecumseh – the hometown of a 24-year-old woman murdered in downtown Detroit during Super Bowl XL – reminds Shawn of a story he did with Jim Schaefer back in 2006 about a creepy high school coach from the small town that includes the epic line: “…how you going to play the Dizzle like that?” When the conversation FINALLY turns to ML’s latest investigation, he and Marc get caught up on the case of Kyle Smith, a 24-year-old woman who was shot to death on Woodward Avenue a day before Super Bowl XL. ML and Marc discuss Smith’s fascinating life, which included a heroin addiction and a brush with one of the most notorious cops in recent history: Robocop. Smith was standing outside the Good Life Lounge when she was shot by a man she bumped into around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 4, 2006. ML discusses what happened next. Police had a suspect in Smith’s murder, but couldn’t break his alibi. Smith’s family wonders whether Robocop might have been involved, since Smith testified against him in one of the biggest police corruption cases in recent Detroit history. The jury didn’t convict any of the officers, and Smith slept with a sawed-off shotgun under her mattress out of fear Robocop might seek his revenge. Marc asks whether the killing could have been a hit. ML shares some details from an investigator on the case that suggest it could have been more than a random shooting. ML shares some homicide statistics that reveal how murders have gone down since 2006, then shares one statistic that hasn’t changed. Marc asks about the other person shot when Smith was killed. ML shares what the man’s father said about the aftermath of the tragedy. Not everyone ML contacted would talk about Smith’s murder. Two people who blew him off were former Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and current Detroit City Council President Pro Tem James Tate, who used to be a police spokesman. 16 APR 2024 · Eli Zaret zooms in to talk about a major league wife swap, Caitlin Clark, the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and whatever the hell else he wants. (Hey, he's Eli!) STRAIGHT DOPE: Marc creates another outstanding intro with matching video starring ML and Shawn in a trailer originally featuring Roger Moore and Stacey Keach, which you can only see if you’re a Patreon supporter donating $5 a month. ML wonders whether he is Moore or Keach. Shawn offers his answer. Eli barely says hello before Shawn takes over the show, turning it into a Caitlin Clark and women’s NCAA basketball love fest. ML tries to reassert control, but Eli and Marc tell him to stand down. The Detroit Pistons season ended, mercifully. Eli opines on his experience with the team and ML says Tom Gores is one of the worst owners in professional sports for keeping a GM who couldn’t win and a coach who didn’t want to coach. Did Tarik Skubal blow his chance at the Cy Young on Opening Day?  Who even suggested such a preposterous thing? The crew discusses.Eli weighs in on the Tigers broadcast teams and ML tells a Craig Monroe story that turned him into a fan. Get Eli’s take. (Spoiler alert: If you're not Ernie Harwell, Eli isn't impressed) ML asks Eli why so many Michigan Wolverine coaches are getting busted for drunken driving. Marc says there’s nothing to see here.  Fritz Peterson, a New York Yankees pitcher who traded families with a fellow Yankees hurler in 1973, died. ML asks Eli to reflect on the public outcry at the time but, in another act of defiance, Eli prefers to talk about Dennis Eckersley and Rick Manning’s complicated relations with Eck’s wife. • Best One Yeti - April 9, 2024

9 APR 2024 · A star of “Sasquatch Sunset” talks Detroit, Hollywood, surfing and the documentary he stars in during the Freep Film Festival, which kicks off this weekend. Then ML, Marc and Shawn meet two guys using garish track suits to raise money for charity before ML shares some boasts from guys who think they could shut down Caitlin Clark. STRAIGHT DOPE: Marc is solely responsible for this week’s intro video and audio selection, which explains why he has cast ML in a new version of the Steve Martin classic “The Jerk.” ML responds by telling Marc and Shawn he doesn’t need anything … except maybe this chair, this Thermos, this remote control and this dog. Only it turns out he doesn’t need this dog… Christophe Zajac-Denek launched his career in the entertainment industry as a drummer in the Detroit band Hard Lessons. After six years without breaking through, he moved to LA and turned to acting to help pay his bills. Surprisingly, his plan seems to be working, with roles in “Twin Peaks” and the new “Sasquatch Sunset.” If you don’t recognize his name, you may recognize him by his 4-foot-4 stature. Christophe tells ML, Marc and Shawn about life as a little person and how he hopes his documentary will make a big difference. Christophe has found a lot of different gigs in Hollywood, including a recurring role on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." He describes many of those roles as “foams,” meaning he is inside a foam costume. ML asks him how many star vehicles there are for little people who aren’t named Peter Dinklage or Warrick Davis. Christophe discusses the challenges. Marc inquires what it was like to work on “Sasquatch Sunset,” a new movie that has plenty of Yetis but no dialogue. Christophe has third billing, behind Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough. After the show, Marc showed ML the trailer which starts with, to put it mildly, an rather unconventional clip. ML asks Christophe how he deals with people staring at him, a topic he discusses at length in his “Standing on Water” documentary. Marc asks Christophe to share some of the stupid questions people ask him, and Christophe tells a funny story that occurred while shopping at Honey Bee Market.Dating is so tough for little people that Christophe says 99 percent of women are not interested in him and the 1 percent who are have problems. ML, who is over 6-foot-1, tells Christophe he has the same problem. So they make plans to hit the town together next time Christophe is in Detroit. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/im-kind-of-a-big-deal/id1484411273. https://freepfilmfestival.com/ August Gitschlag and Conrad Maziarz drop by to promote Track Suit 10, their annual charity fundraising party at Whiskey In The Jar in Hamtramck. This week’s gig will be held Saturday, April 13. The party features outrageous track suits, great music, raffles, prize baskets and good times. • The Golden Ruhl - April 2, 2024

2 APR 2024 · As the voice of the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, Neal Ruhl had a front row seat for one of the best stories to come out of March Madness. He tells Marc and ML what it was like to travel with Cinderella while Cinder-Fella Shawn waits to zoom in. STRAIGHT DOPE: Last week, we had the Beauty: Reporter extraordinaire Erika Erickson. This week, we were expecting the Beast … but Shawn cheated us. Again! They call him the Golden Ruhl. Or at least ML thinks they should. Either way, play-by-play man Neal Ruhl was at the center of the college basketball world when the Oakland Golden Grizzlies upset the legendary Kentucky Wildcats and coach John Calipari in March Madness. Neal takes us behind the scenes on what it was like for that wild ride. Marc asks Neal whether he believed Oakland could beat mighty Kentucky. Listen and learn which one of these broadcast veterans made the right call. Neal wears a lot of hats. In addition to his work for Oakland University, he calls games for Detroit City Football Club and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQS_-Q9xMgM&list=PLkuv7SDBHkEXdK2mnAyMzAq1ppMK1sKO0 Oakland coach Greg Kampe was a man in demand after his team pulled off an epic upset. Neal tells us how Kamp juggled all of the requests for his time – and prepared his team for N.C. State, a team they took to overtime. No other team in the tourney has played N.C. State so tough. The Wolfpack just beat Duke to advance to the Final Four. Jack Gohlke went from nobody to overnight sensation by drilling 3-pointers for Oakland University. So when the NIL offers came pouring in, he didn’t have professional help to deal with them. Instead, he turned to some unlikely advisers. Neal tells us all about it. Al Michaels became a broadcasting legend after his “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” call at the 1980 Olympics when the U.S. men’s hockey team beat the Soviets. ML asks Neal how he prepared for the biggest moment of his broadcasting career. Oakland’s season is done, but Neal never stops. He’s calling Detroit City Football Club games. He tells us where to watch DCFC for free and on cable. For once, Shawn is not packing his bag to watch one of our local sports teams. So ML and Marc ask him where he’s headed next. Shawn says Vegas, but will he tell us what he expects to happen in Vegas? Shawn asks who is the biggest star still playing college basketball during March Madness. His answer will surprise anyone … anyone who doesn’t know Shawn, that is. Shawn doesn't like the word "bum" -- especially when it applies to the Detroit Pistons' draft options. Find out why, Marc asks Shawn to weigh in on ML’s response to a troll who dragged ML into an X battle after Marc’s Michigan Wolverines defeated ML’s Michigan State Spartans in the NCAA college hockey tournament. Shawn says ML was “factually correct,” but then sides with the forces of evil in the never-ending effort to take a good man down! ML asks a pertinent question: Who is the little brother – the one who lets his accomplishments speak for themselves, or the one who has to tell everyone “Look at what I did, Daddy?” whenever something goes his way. • Erika 250 - March 26, 2024

26 MAR 2024 · Erika Erickson celebrates our 250th episode as we stay classy Detroit with a graphic conversation about dead bodies, crazy women with knives, placenta recipes and scandals that kept ML out of the National Honor Society. STRAIGHT DOPE:  Erika Erickson joins ML, Marc and Shawn as we mark a milestone: 250 episodes of ML’s Soul of Detroit. And what better way to mark such an august occasion than a discussion of decomposing bodies. But what do you expect when you’ve got three reporters on a show with a producer who loves true crime and legal matters? Erika, who is now a communications specialist, can still be seen on a TV near you. She tells about her upcoming star turn on a true crime show that recounts a story she covered while working at Fox 2 Detroit. The chilling case involves an honor roll student who stabbed a classmate in a Warren high school. Of course, this provokes a story from ML about how a scandal kept him out of the National Honor Society.Erika and Shawn swap stories about what it’s like to be in a courtroom when someone is convicted. Erika is still shaken by the eyes of the high school murderer. Find out why. Marc accuses ML of fetish-shaming after the discussion turns to weirdos who obsess over things like the feet of women on TV. Erika says she and her friends get some very odd requests … none of which they fulfill! ML impresses Erika by knowing what TRL stands for after Erika shares how she was on MTV back in high school. She didn’t get to meet Carson Daly and still has some hard feelings over how her mom made her go back to school instead of hanging out in NYC for another day. Long before she became a TV reporter, Erika was a figure skater. She recalls her days of messing with her coach by flying around the rink when she should have been working on her double axels. https://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/ml-elrick/2024/03/24/michigan-state-board-trustees-investigation-conduct-rema-vassar/73057602007/.https://www.mlsoulofdetroit.com/episode/erika-erickson-exclusive-december-19-2023/. https://www.patreon.com/MLSoulofDetroit/posts.  GEEK OF THE WEEK: A candidate who gave his concession speech before the polls closed didn’t win his race, but he can celebrate being this week’s geek!ROOM 7609Listener Joe K tells a great story about Washington Social Club and inspires us to play their “Charlie the Russian” track. • Soul 'Til I Die - March 19, 2024

19 MAR 2024 · DCFC CEO Sean Mann joins ML and Marc for our annual “State of the Team” episode, discussing everything from Le Rouge's new national TV deal to the Northern Guard Supporters to the team’s future as it outgrows Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. The “other” Shawn zooms in before hitting the road for March Madness. STRAIGHT DOPE: What do ML Elrick and Iggy Pop have in common? Besides being rock stars, they are both owners of the Detroit City Football Club – the homegrown soccer team known as Le Rouge. Le Rouge started its season with a win last weekend and hosts its home opener this Saturday. So ML and Marc invite team founder and CEO Sean Mann to Red Shovel HQ to discuss the upcoming season. http://www.detcityfc.com/ http://www.detcityfc.com/http://www.detcityfc.com./ After ML says his ownership shares are essentially worthless, Sean corrects him and reveals that the team will create a marketplace this year for owners to sell their shares – or buy more. BTW, Sean said there are 100,000 shares, which is why he’s not too worried about taking orders from ML, who owns 5 measly shares. It’s been nearly a decade since DCFC moved from Cass Tech High School in downtown Detroit to Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, and the team has outgrown its beloved stadium. Sean says the team needs a new 10,000- to 12,000-seat stadium that will cost $100 million. So does that mean Keyworth’s days are numbered? Listen and learn. Marc and Shawn dismiss ML’s suggestion that he and Iggy could become the next Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney of “Welcome to Wrexham” fame, but Sean says the reality show about a Welsh minor league soccer team has had a dramatic impact on interest in soccer.   DCFC plays in the USL Championship – the second highest level of professional soccer in America. They are also the easiest to see on free TV. DCFC will appear on CBS four times and on ESPN once. All other games will be on CBS Channel 62 or Channel 50. BTW, the top tier of U.S. professional soccer – MLS -- is available only to Apple TV subscribers who pay extra for the soccer package. So it will be easier to see DCFC than Lionel Messi. No discussion of DCFC is complete without checking on the Northern Guard Supporters. ML speculates that some of their cheers could keep network censors busy. Sean provides an update on NSG, including some of the concerns about Hamtramck politics. DCFC lost about a $1 million two years ago, and lost about $2 million last year. So is the team in danger of folding? Hear what Sean has to say about the future of Le Rouge. There is a new benefit for season ticketholders who can’t make DCFC games – ML explains how to make sure you never waste your ducats. https://twitter.com/DavidHarns/status/1768742200622342184. Baseball is the only major league sport in which the managers dress like the players. ML suggests that Izzo would not look great in shorts and a tank top, but says Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell already looks like he’s wearing football pads. https://www.patreon.com/MLSoulofDetroit/posts GEEK OF THE WEEK: ML is sick of the “bent carrot” commercials that interrupt “Tokyo Vice.” Listen and learn how this week’s geek is also ruining ML’s appetite for salad. ROOM 7609: Listener Mike says he inspired Another Girl to create a video for their song “Sometimes.” Patreon subscribers can watch the video after ML share’s Mike’s story. • The Perfect Bore - March 12, 2024

12 MAR 2024 · ML is back from Dublin, where he learned how to pour a perfect pint of Guinness (and drank many imperfect pours). Marc tracks Shawn down at the airport, where he had to be reminded that we have been doing a podcast every Tuesday FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS. Mayhem ensues. STRAIGHT DOPE:  Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, ML returns from Dublin, where he received a certificate from the Guinness Storehouse for pouring a “beautiful pint” and spent some time at a pub along the River Liffey where he met a Texan trying to sell whiskey to the Irish. Will it work? We’ll find out later. In the meantime, Tex bought ML a couple of whiskeys that were way better than anything ML would have bought himself. Then, moments before Shawn boards a flight, he regales Marc and ML with his views on appropriate airport dress. He also delivers a little good news to his fellow travellers: He NEVER wears his shorts on a flight. ML asks Marc and Shawn what kind of movies they watch on the plane, then explains why he favors old movies – a habit that led him to make a joyful discovery while watching Christopher Walken and his movie son in “Batman Returns.” Yawn Windsor also highlights a favorite Walken moment from the Tim Burton film. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/shawn-windsor/2024/03/11/detroit-pistons-troy-weaver-better-in-nba-draft-than-in-the-stands/72925854007/  For all the hand-wringing we do about heated rivalries like the one between the Spartans and Wolverines, ML says our beefs don’t compare to soccer fans. His trip to watch Tottenham Hotspur in London taught him some dos and don’ts about what you can wear to the pub or to the game. Listen and learn how a bargain ML thought he landed for an AirBNB in London almost ended with all of his gear tossed out on the street. Track suits can be very spiffy, but they are not welcome in certain pubs at certain times in London and Dublin. ML explains why. Casey Kasem. Jack Palance. Michael Jordan. Orson Welles. ML and Marc play some of their favorite celebrity outtakes. Members of our Patreon Soul Patrol can watch along with the gang. • Everything's Different - March 5, 2024

5 MAR 2024 · ML Elrick is MIA, but Eli Zaret is stepping up in his place. Eli, Shawn and Marc marvel at how different everything is... and that's not a bad thing. STRAIGHT DOPE: ML Elrick had left the building to head over to the UK for some soccer action. Longtime professional broadcaster and friend Eli Zaret joins the show to pick up the heavy lifting. Catching up on the news: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/oakland/2024/03/05/james-crumbley-father-trial-oxford-school-shooting-involuntary-manslaughter/72837859007/ https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/macomb/2024/03/05/select-distributor-explosions-teen-dies/72849661007/ Eli Zaret zooms in from Florida as Marc recounts his first ever experience with him way back in 1997. Eli is coming up on his 74th birthday. After a long successful career in TV and radio he recollects how much the landscape of media and sports media have changed. There are too many podcasts and too many content creators. How does anyone break through and make a living? Shawn points out how in sports the winners of games are now almost secondary to the stories that surround it. Most times the stories and the narratives are what drive people to watch the games. The most recent example being Iowa basketball player Caitlin Clark's scoring record. GEEK OF THE WEEK: NIL and conference expansion in college football have not ruined the game. Some people are saying it has made the game better. BUT- https://sports.yahoo.com/sec-big-ten-exclusive-first-215421942.html ROOM 7609: Listener Herman's last pick was 4 years ago and Shawn approved. Will he have the same luck with his most recent choice- King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? FEEDBACK: Some people want to eat in the nude and others just want Texas Beans.
